Mullaperiyar Dam

                                            Mullaperiyar Dam
Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River[1]. It is located 881 m (2,890 ft) above mean sea level on the Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats in ThekkadiIdukki District ofKeralaIndia. It was constructed in 1895 by the British Government, to divert water eastwards to Madras Presidency area (the present-day Tamil Nadu). It has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft) from the foundation and length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft).[1] The Periyar National ParkThekkady is located around the dam's reservoir. The safety of the dam has been a matter of concern and a point of dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu States.

Name

Earlier known as the Periyar dam as it was basically meant to dam the Periyar river,[4] the present name Mullaperiyar is derived from a portmanteau of Mullayar and Periyar, at the confluence of which the dam is located[5].

[edit]Purpose

The geography of the Periyar river which flows westward into the Arabian Sea had suggested to engineers in the first decade of the nineteenth century that the river waters could be diverted eastward to flow towards the Bay of Bengal and provide water to the arid Madurai region of Madras Presidency which was in dire need for a greater supply than the small Vaigai River could give.[4]The dam, finally constructed in 1895, created the Periyar Thekkady reservoir, from which water was diverted eastwards to Tamil Nadu via a tunnel enabling the water to join the Vaigai River which was dammed to provide a source for irrigating large tracts of Madurai. Initially the dam waters were used only for irrigation. Later, the Periyar Power Station in Lower Periyar, Tamil Nadu was built which generates hydro-electricity from the diverted waters.[6]

[edit]Design

The Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam, which uses its weight and the forces gravity to support the reservoir weight and remain stable. The main dam has a maximum height of 53.6 m (176 ft) and length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft). Its crest is 3.6 m (12 ft) wide while the base has a width of 42.2 m (138 ft). It is comprised of a main dam section, spillway section on its left and an auxiliary (or "baby dam") to the right. Its reservoir can withhold 443,230,000 m3 (359,332 acre·ft) of water, 299,130,000 m3 (242,509 acre·ft) of which is active (live) storage.[3][2]

Saina loses to Tine Baun in Hong Kong Open

HONG KONG: Saina Nehwal bowed out of the Hong Kong Open badminton after losing to Denmark's Tine Baun 16-21, 15-21 in the women's singles quarterfinals here Friday.
Baun, seeded seventh, took just 29 minutes to beat fourth seeded Saina.
Saina, who was defending her title here, has been going through a form slump this year.
It was also end of the road for Ajay Jayaram and Gurusaidutt in the men's singles.
Jayaram gave a tough fight to top seeded Lee Chong Wei, before losing 16-21, 13-21.
Gurusaidutt went down to second seeded Long Chen 13-21, 21-23.

Tal Chess: Anand held by Nepomniachtchi

MOSCOW: World Champion Viswanathan Anand's hunt for the elusive victory continued as he was held to a draw by former European champion Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in the third round of the Tal Memorial Chess Tournament here.
The Indian yet again could not get much with his white pieces despite going for a complex variation and it all came easy for Nepomniachtchi in the first game to end on what was a day for black pieces here.
The first two rounds had produced just three decisive games and the third round produced as many in a single day.
Incidentally, all the victories came with black pieces and in the other game too Norwegian world number one Magnus Carlsen came close to beating Russia's Vladimir Kramnik who played with white.
Levon Aronian won a fine game against Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine while Peter Svidler grounded the hopes of American Hikaru Nakamura. World Championship challenger Boris Gelfand found the going tough for the second day running as he was outplayed by Ukrainian turned Russian Sergey Karjakin.
As a result, Carlsen, Aronian, Karjakin and Nepomniachtchi emerged as joint leaders on two points each while Anand, Svidler and Ivanchuk are close behind on 1.5 points apiece.
Kramnik and Nakamura share the eighth spot on one point while Gelfand is at the bottom of the table with just a half point in his kitty.
Playing white, Anand faced the Grunfeld defense from Nepomniachtchi that the Indian has himself employed as black many times.
The middle game saw the Russian finding right moves to equalise and the exchange of pieces at regular intervals also did not help Anand's cause.
Pretty early in the middle game as many as three minor pieces and three pawns changed hands and Nepomniachtchi had a perpetual check on board to end it up very fast. The game was agreed drawn in a mere 27 moves.
Carlsen played an enterprising game after what looked like a very difficult position out of an English opening.
Kramnik pushed for an attack on both flanks and in the end stood worse after a neat defense by Carlsen who later missed the thread and settled for a draw in 41 moves.
Svidler's Grunfeld came good against Nakamura who could not find the best continuation after the former sacrificed an exchange. Svidler wrapped the issue in style after winning two white pawns.
Aronian won a difficult game against Ivanchuk out of a Berlin defense game while Karjakin outplayed Gelfand from a level position arising out a Catalan opening.
Results round 3: V Anand (Ind, 1.5) drew with Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 2); Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 1) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 2); Boris Gelfand (0.5) lost to Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 2); Hikaru Nakamura (Usa, 1) lost to Peter Svidler (Rus, 1.5); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 1.5) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm, 2).

Americans win 4th straight Presidents Cup

MELBOURNE: The Americans returned Down Under and this time wound up on top in the Presidents Cup.
Jim Furyk became the fourth player to win all five of his matches, and the bottom half of the lineup was strong enough Sunday to give the Americans their fourth straight win over the Internationals in this lopsided series.
Perhaps it was only fitting that Tiger Woods clinched the cup for the second straight time.
U.S. captain Fred Couples was criticized for using a pick on Woods, who had been out with an injury most of the season and had not won since his personal life crumbled two years ago. Woods played well all week, even if he didn't always get rewarded with a point. In his singles match against Aaron Baddeley, he was never seriously challenged.
Woods closed out Baddeley, 4 and 3, and the celebration was on. The only left was for Steve Stricker in the anchor match to beat Y.E. Yang for the final score, 19-15.
"I was hoping it wasn't going to come down to us," Woods said. "I was hoping that Stricks and I could take a victory lap back here. But we didn't get off to a good start early. I was telling Joey (LaCava, his caddie) on the range, 'It's probably going to come down to the last four matches.' We needed to get our point, so we went out there and played really well today and put a lot of heat on Badds."
Couples said Woods was ready to go all week at Royal Melbourne.
"He was ready for a month," Couples said. "Certainly, I couldn't answer how he was going to play, but this week I think he showed to himself that his swing is back and he's healthy, and that's more important to me. Obviously, we want to win the cup, but it's more important for me to have people realize that he can play the game."
He can celebrate, too.
Woods took his turn in joining the Fanatics, the Aussie mostly male cheerleading group that goes to big sporting events. Woods even donned one of their green caps and slapped hands in the crowd.
It was a small measure of revenge for the Americans, whose only lost came at Royal Melbourne in 1998. And it was vindication for Couples, who said a month early that he was taking Woods because he was the "best player forever."
International captain Greg Norman got in on the debate, saying he would have taken PGA champion Keegan Bradley over Woods.
"He stepped up to the plate. He putted extremely well," Norman said. "Any player hates to see another great player struggle, because we all know what it's like to go through the ins and outs of the game. At the end of the day, you want to see the player who has dominated the game come back."
As for Couples' taking Woods over Bradley?
"I did make those comments," Norman said. "I probably still would have gone for Keegan Bradley because he's a major champion."
The International team's only win came 13 years ago at Royal Melbourne, when the Americans suffered their biggest loss in any team competition. There was no repeat this time, not even close.
The Americans led after each session, and their 13-9 lead going into the final session Sunday was too much for the International team to overcome, even with a loud and boisterous Australian crowd behind it.
Ryo Ishikawa, Charl Schwartzel, K.T. Kim and Geoff Ogilvy got the International side going. But the outcome was never seriously in doubt. Furyk, David Toms and Woods were at the bottom of the lineup, and none ever trailed.
Toms routed Robert Allenby, 7 and 5, giving the Australian a dubious distinction. He joined John Huston (in 1998) as the only captain's picks to not win a single point.
Furyk, coming off his worst season since he was a PGA Tour rookie, joined Woods, Shigeki Maruyama and Mark O'Meara as the only players to record a 5-0 record in the Presidents Cup. Furyk made an eagle on the par-5 second and beat Ernie Els 4 and 3.
Mickelson, 3-0 going into singles, conceded the first three holes to Adam Scott and conceded another hole at the eighth to fall 4 down. He rallied far too late and lost, 2 and 1.
Couples wasn't planning on Furyk winning all his matches. Then again, nothing ever surprises him.
"We needed it. He was a leader," Couples said. "He and Phil told me, which was very odd — I wasn't planning on it on Tuesday night — that they wanted to play together. And they rode and rode and rode. Jimmy going 5-0 is great. It's cool. It's unique. It's fun. And I think he's happy, as the rest of the 14 guys are."
Not so happy was an International team that can't figure out how to win.
"It's disappointing to not get the cup this year, but to have this event here at home, it has been a fantastic week and one I'll remember for my whole career," Scott said. "We played hard. I think it's just a really demanding golf course. No matter how good you are, on this course it's just too hard to hit the ball well to get it around here. And they might have done it just a little bit better than us this week."

VELAYUDHAM - CENSORED WITH U CERTIFICATE

vijay s velayudham

Movie - Velayudham

Director - M Raja

Producer - V Ravichandran

Music - Vijay Antony

Cast - Vijay, Hansika, Genelia, Santhanam and others.

Vijay is back in action with Velayudham an out and out mass entertainer with all Navarasas of commercial cinema mixed in the right proposition. Director M Raja has packaged it neatly catering to the taste of all sections of the audiences.

It is Vijays Diwali treat to his fans. The film carries a old story line, but the way it has been packaged and delivered is something that needs to be looked at. Raja has ensured not to enforce any unnecessary scene or dialogue at any stage, which hinders the speed at which the movie goes.

Vijay flaunts his pumped-up physique for the first time as he takes off his shirt in the climax. Director M Raja has packaged the film smartly and Vijay appears to be having a rollicking good time with his scorching screen-presence and his infectious enthusiasm for dancing. He throws himself completely into the film's every action scene, puts his casual and laidback style of dialogue delivery to good use in the film's romantic and comic scenes. There are no unnecessary punch dialogues for this movie and Vijay's body language seems to be improving from one movie to another

Hansika looks cute, appears confident, and is well cast as the spirited Vaidehi. Her comedy scenes with Vijay are a scream especially the scene when she comes in western clothes to impress her lover. Genelia does justice to her role and Santhanams jokes are funny. Saranya Mohan is perfect in the sister role.

One major plus for the movie is Vijay Antony's songs which are melodious and mass. The Vijay introductory song Sonna Puriyadhu.., Chillaxxx.. and Molachu Moonu... are the pick of the lot.The first half of the movie appeals very well with family audiences, which has good mixture of few action scenes, comedy, romance and so on. However as the second half starts, the transformation of Velu to Velayudham has been showcased well without any logical traps. Raja has also ensured to even finish the movie well with a gripping climax, unveiling a new Vijay for all, who can portray emotions like never seen before. The way vijay carries out his emotions, comedy, action sequences, and ofcourse his dance in the movie is a biggest plus

On the otherside, the film is far too long, especially the second half. Shorter in length, Velayudham would have been even more crisp. But still it is a perfect outing with family, if you are looking for time pass entertainment.

Vijay has ensured to deliver a neat commercial cinema yet again. Along with Vijay, a special thanks to Raja for his good and gripping screenplay,  Vijay Antony for his peppy songs, and also to Suba who had penned good dialogues,  which has lifted the movie to great heights now.

Ra.One Review: Direction & Music

Anubhav Sinha’s direction is good. Credit goes to him for giving the Indian audience a supremely novel experience. He has excelled in the visual effects department as well as in extracting good work from the actors. Music (Vishal-Shekhar) could’ve been better. While the Chhammak Chhallo song is extraordinary, the others could’ve and should’ve been better. The Dildaara song is appealing. The other songs range from fair to good. Song picturisations (Ganesh Hegde and Feroz Khan) are very eye-filling. The picturisations ofChhammak Chhallo and Criminal songs (both by Ganesh Hegde) are extraordinary. Background score by Vishal-Shekhar is wonderful. Nicola Pecorini and V. Manikandan’s camerawork is marvellous. The film looks just too beautiful. Visual effects are outstanding. Action scenes, choreographed by Parvez Khan, Spiro Razatos and Firoz Boss, are mind-boggling. Sets (Sabu Cyril and Marcus Wookey) are lovely. The conversion from 2D to 3D (by Prime Focus) is remarkable. Production values are just too grand.

Ra.One Movie Review: Star Performances

Shah Rukh Khan does a splendid job and is the life of the film. He is good as Shekhar and fantastic as G.One. The look of G.One is wonderful. Kareena Kapoor is also lovely. She looks gorgeous and acts with effortless ease. She is brilliant in emotional scenes. Both, Shah Rukh and Kareena’s dances are remarkable. Arjun Rampal makes an effective villain and looks very handsome and formidable. Master Armaan Varma makes a sensational debut. He looks charming and acts with such aplomb that it is difficult to believe, this is his first film. Tom Wu is menacing enough. Dalip Tahhil is stylish as ever. Shahana Goswami is as natural and realistic as can be. Satish Shah and Suresh Menon evoke laughter. Rajnikanth appears in a single scene in special appearance and makes his presence felt with mersmerising effect. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra don’t add much in special appearances. Amitabh Bachchan’s voice over in a portion of the film heightens the impact.

Ra.One Review: Script Analysis

The story, penned by Anubhav Sinha, has been liberally borrowed from several Hollywood films but it has been suitably Indianised. The Indianised screenplay, written by Kanika Dhillon, David Benullo, Mushtaq Shiekh and Anubhav Sinha, is fast-paced for a good part, but the first 20 minutes, and some portions in the second half are a bit boring. Perhaps, the most heart-touching Indian sentiment in the drama is when G.One comes to the rescue of Sonia and Pratik for the first time, appearing like Shekhar. There are other emotional moments like when Sonia takes a promise from G.One that he would save Pratik’s life, come what may, and when G.One and Pratik join forces to try and combat Ra.One in the end. Also, how Pratik is made to realise that ultimately, it is the hero who is good, and it is the villain who is evil and that good is what one should pursue, is subtle yet effective. But the emotions are understated and although they touch the heart-strings, they do not draw tears from the audience’s eyes. Had the sentiments been more pronounced, it would’ve been better as the viewers would be moved to tears.
However, where there are less-than-required emotions, there are some sequences which are absolutely brilliant and constitute major highlights of the film. Among such highlight sequences worthy of applause in the cinemas are the one in which Ra.One chases Sonia and Pratik; the one in which G.One appears all of a sudden between Ra.One and the car in which Sonia and Pratik are seated (in this particular scene, there will be deafening applause in the cinemas); the action sequences between G.One and Ra.One; the taxi-stand sequence at Bombay airport; the Rajnikanth sequence; the sequence showing the re-construction of Ra.One first and G.One later; the train sequence, etc. Here, it must be added that although the writers and the director have taken care to explain the technicalities of the video game in a simplified manner, yet, the drama will be more understood by the city and multiplex audience than the audience in the smaller centres and those frequenting single-screen cinemas. Again, since the base of the story is the Ra.One video game, it will not be fully understood by the computer-illiterate older generation. On the other hand, kids and the youth will love the drama for the very reasons the older generation wouldn’t – it has a lot of technical jargon, the drama is more subtle and less over-dramatic; and the experience is absolutely novel for the Indian audiences.
Comedy is enjoyable and entertaining but the film could’ve done with more of it, especially in the pre-interval portion. The visual effects are excellent and so are the 3D effects (for those watching in 3D). Another plus point of the drama is that it is not stretched too much. The climax, in which the young son of Shekhar collaborates with G.One, to fight the evil Ra.One is exciting in a different way – more than a nail-biting and edge-of-the-seat climax (which the chase by Ra.One in the first half is), it has heart-warming sentiments of father and son.

1st Test: South Africa seamers strike early

Cape Town: Australia lost both openers inside six overs as South Africa's fast bowlers applied early pressure in a rain-delayed opening session of the first Test at Newlands on Wednesday.
Australia were 39-2 at lunch after Shane Watson and Phil Hughes fell to a combination of swing and seam movement from Dale Steyn and debutant Vernon Philander, who quickly capitalized on bowler-friendly conditions in Cape Town.
AFP
Watson, on 3, edged an away-swinger from Steyn to Jacques Kallis at slip in the fifth over. Hughes was out for 9 when Philander got one to nip away off the seam and the left-hander nicked to wicket-keeper Mark Boucher for Philander's first Test wicket - and Boucher's 500th catch in Tests.
The opening skirmishes of the two-Test series started nearly two hours late because of rain, prompting South Africa to put Australia in to bat on a juicy surface at the coastal ground, which hasn't hosted a Test this early in the South African season for 90 years.
Shaun Marsh was 17 not out at lunch as Australia's batsmen battled through the shortened first session. Ricky Ponting was unbeaten on 8, including a pull for six off Philander in his first scoring shot.
One of two debutants for the Proteas alongside legspinner Imran Tahir, Philander was given the new ball with Steyn - and ahead of Morne Morkel - and troubled Hughes early with a bustling, aggressive spell.
Steyn made the initial breakthrough, however, with a full and fast delivery which squared up Watson and flew to Kallis at slip.
Hughes had sent a thick outside edge wide of third slip and away for his only boundary, but he fell in the over after Watson as Australia slipped to 13-2.
Philander's maiden Test wicket came on his home ground and Boucher extended his world record for catches in Tests with a regulation take to move 121 ahead of Adam Gilchrist's 379.
Pakistan-born spinner Tahir bowled just one over before lunch, returning a maiden as South Africa seized the early initiative - although Marsh stroked three fours to show signs he was settling in on a challenging pitch as the sun broke through the clouds as lunch approached.

An HTML Application (HTA; file extension ".hta") is a Microsoft Windows application that uses HTML and Dynamic HTML in a browser to provide the application's graphical interface. A regular HTML file is confined to the security model of the web browser, communicating only to web servers and manipulating only webpage objects and site cookies. An HTA runs as a fully trusted application and therefore has more privileges, like creation/editing/removal of files and Windows Registry entries. Because they operate outside the browser's security model, HTAs cannot be executed via HTTP, but must be downloaded (just like an EXE file) and executed from local file system.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the predominant markup language for web pages. HTML elements are the basic building-blocks of webpages.
HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags, enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content. HTML tags most commonly come in pairs like <h1> and </h1>, although some tags, known as empty elements, are unpaired, for example <img>. The first tag in a pair is the start tag, the second tag is the end tag (they are also called opening tags and closing tags). In between these tags web designers can add text, tags, comments and other types of text-based content.
The purpose of a web browser is to read HTML documents and compose them into visible or audible web pages. The browser does not display the HTML tags, but uses the tags to interpret the content of the page.
HTML elements form the building blocks of all websites. HTML allows images and objects to be embedded and can be used to create interactive forms. It provides a means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, quotes and other items. It can embed scripts in languages such as JavaScript which affect the behavior of HTML webpages.
Web browsers can also refer to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define the appearance and layout of text and other material. The W3C, maintainer of both the HTML and the CSS standards, encourages the use of CSS over explicitly presentational HTML markup.[1]
